Bob Bickerton Came to Town

On Thursday, the musician Bob Bickerton visited our school. He showed us his amazing musical instruments. Then he played a tune and some of the children and teachers danced merrily! After that he told the story of Tom and Huhana, who lived in the days when whalers worked in New Zealand.  They fell in love and married.

This is also a traditional Maori instrument, the koauau, and can be made from bone, wood or bamboo.

Bob played the violin beautifully.

Bob played the harp when Tom and Huhuna fell in love.

Hearing the Irish bagpipes made us want to dance the Irish jig!

Ronald MacDonald came to town

Ronald MacDonald came to Te Anau School because he had lost his sock.

He had to be careful of hazards while he was travelling to school.

He wondered if any of us had seen his missing sock.

We found his missing sock on his back!

Ronald MacDonald's sock friend reminded us again about road safety.

Ronald said goodbye as we went back into class.

More Anzac Day activities

We walked down to Anzac Park to see the memorial to our soldiers.

 Then we went to the library to experience life in the trenches.  We saw some of  the old equipment they may have used.

After that we turned the lights out and heard the sounds of battle that the soldiers would have heard as they sheltered in the trenches.

Poppies we made for Anzac Day

We have been learning about Anzac Day, and why poppies are a special way of remembering those who fought and died at Gallipoli. We made our own poppies
using coloured paper.  We put them on a background of old documents from the War.

Room 4 Steam Energy

Thinking Thursday 23rd October 2014 

We are learning about 'Body Fuel' and how it gives us energy. . OnThursday we had Christoph and Alessandra visit Rooms 2 and 4 to teach us how machines use energy.We learnt that energy is not 'made', it is changed from one form to another. A steam energy uses the heat from coal to heat water, which turns to steam and makes the pistons in the engine turn around. This makes the engine go!

This is Christoph setting up the steam engine. 

When we turned the handle on this machine, the energy we used made the light glow.

Whenthe handle on this machine was turned it also made a light glow.

The steam engine got a bit smoky and had to be taken outside to cool down.

We are making our own windmills.  We will use the wind's energy to make them spin.
